Taking Care of Emotional Business: Advice for Managing Yourself, Your Employees, and Your Clients

    Guest Speaker: Jill Robinson

Assistant Dean of External Relations and Strategic Partnerships

The Jack C. Massey College of Business

    Belmont University

The Program: Open to all ULI Nashville Members, this program with Jill Robinson will address the emotional labor of leadership which requires learning to have compassion, handling others’ emotions, and taking care of yourself through it all. As described succinctly in this Harvard Business Review article, people in positions of leadership have always managed their own emotions to be seen as effective leaders - and are often charged with managing the emotions of others as well. Those in leadership often absorb this unpaid, invisible work in order to responsibly and thoughtfully navigate the needs, anxiety, grief, ideas, and aspirations of employees, coworkers, and clients.

Managers and leaders have been quietly taking on an extra level of responsibility since the pandemic. The uncertainties of the last few years and today’s post-Covid economy have amplified the emotional labor for those in leadership roles as many employees are dealing with burnout, mental health, and work/life balance issues. Jill will have key takeaways that address understanding how to set boundaries and other essential skills for taking care of your emotional business.

The Speaker: Jill started her career in Nashville’s nonprofit sector working with TACA and LifeWay, while concurrently joining Charter Resource Group, a change management and CEO coaching consulting firm. Jill earned an M.A. in Organizational Management in 2002 and her M.B.A. in 2004. Shortly after, she joined Belmont University’s Office of the President focusing on presidential initiatives, donor relations, and cross-functional team management.

In the summer of 2007, she moved to the Center for Executive Education as the Director of Executive Learning and Marketing, combining her love for learning, leadership training, and marketing. 2014 brought Jill to the Jack C. Massey College of Business Dean’s Office as Director of External Relations to expand her role to include strategic initiatives, community outreach, and leadership development. And in the summer of 2022, the business school named Jill the Assistant Dean of External Relationships and Strategic Partnerships.
